First ground frost of the 2012/2013 winter

Here on the West coast of Ireland we had the first ground frost of the season last night. The temperature at 0030 IST was 1°C and at 0730IST was -0.5°C

Good thing we brought in some of the tender plants.

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the readings as we use an alcohol thermometer which can move in it’s mountings BUT there was thin ice on a paddling pool very close to the thermometer and that is the first I have seen this season.

One day it would be great to get a proper weather station!

Edit to add: Now the sun is up I can see that there is a dusting of snow on Nephin, and on the Nephin Beg range there is definitely the first ‘snow on the Ben’ for this winter season.

(These are hazy as there is a slight mist about and because of the distance)
